Nilesh M Negi

Systems Engineer | Machine Learning

Member of the High Performance Comptuting & Artificial Intelligence team.
Currently working on machine learning benchmarks for training and inference workloads.
Before this, I used to optimize High Performance Computing applications and extrapolate their performance for Petascale and pre-Exascale systems.

Systems/Software Engineer Vb

January 2020 - Present

AI Technologies and Enablement

  • Characterization and hyper-parameter optimization for multi-GPU scaling of MLPerf training and inference benchmarks.
  • Support machine learning benchmarking requests from customers like Samsung (South Korea), MILA (Canada), Bank Mandiri (Indonesia), NCHC (Taiwan), University of Granada (Spain), TU Delft (Germany).
  • Speaker at HP-CAST 2020. Presented about HPE's AI group and the Deep Learning Benchmarking Suite.

Systems/Software Engineer Vb

May 2018 - December 2019

HPC & AI Performance Engineering

  • Worked on HPE's winning proposal for Los Alamos National Laboratory's Crossroads, with detailed analysis and benchmarking of PENNANT, to extrapolate performance for a 150 petaFLOP system.
  • Conducted characterization studies of HPC applications for Request for Proposals (RFPs) from Max Planck (Germany), IDRIS (Paris), ARCHER2 (UK), CSC (Finland), NCI (Australia).
  • Talked about convergence of HPC & AI and HPE's custom deep learning accelerator at the National Workshop on HPCA 2019.
  • Delivered a workshop on Introduction to Deep Learning for 100+ students at NIT Tiruchirappalli's Pragyan 2019.

Systems/Software Engineer II

November 2015 - April 2018

HPC Performance Benchmarking

  • Worked with GROMACS - molecular dynamics code for biochemical systems and Quantum Espresso - ab-initio quantum chemistry codes for electronic structure calculations.
  • Conducted characterization studies of HPC applications for large Request for Proposals (RFPs) from India's National Supercomputing Mission, Australia's DSTG, Taiwan's NCHC.
  • Led a hands-on workshop on Introduction to High Performance Computing for MPI and OpenMP programming for 50+ undergraduate students at NIT Tiruchirappalli's Pragyan 2018.
  • Showcased HPE’s HPC-as-a-Service Centre of Excellence at the IEEE International Conference on HPC (HiPC 2017).

Hewlett-Packard
2015 college graduate hire. Was directly offered a Senior R&D Engineer position on the basis of my undergrad research and background.

Systems/Software Engineer II

August 2015 - October 2015

HPC Performance Benchmarking

  • Developed and tested a standalone suite of standard HPC codes and software stack (codename: "Framework") with Dr. Dave Mullaly.
  • Used this suite to benchmark and compare performance of different HPE servers and reference architectures.
  • Presented a comparative study of HPC application performance on Intel Broadwell and Intel Knights Landing processors at Intel HPC Developer Conference.

Before HPE, I studied Electrical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad (class of 2015).
The flexible course structure enabled me to explore image processing, embedded systems and micro-electronics, as well as some Computer Science courses.

Bachelors Degree

August 2011 - May 2015

Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering (Hons.) with a Minor in Computer Science and Engineering

  • Undergraduate project on automatic profiling of immune cell migration. A short gist can be found here.
  • Designed a cost-effective add-on module for existing glucometer devices to read digits displayed on the LCD screen. Slides.
  • Served as an undergraduate teaching assistant under Dr. Ashudeb Dutta and Dr. Amit Acharyya from January 2015 - May 2015.
